Services
- Complete Auditorium Design
- Single-point responsibility for acoustics, audio-visual systems, stage lighting, stage drapery, seating layout and sight lines.
- Architectural & Room Acoustics
- Room volume, geometry, reverberation time (RT60) and speech-intelligibility design for auditoriums, theatres, studios and worship spaces, worked to IS 4954 criteria for the room’s intended use.
- Noise & Vibration Control
- Structural isolation, HVAC noise control and background-noise criteria (NC/NR) for quiet, uninterrupted performance spaces.
- Audio-Visual System Design
- Loudspeaker coverage, mixing, projection and control system design matched to the measured acoustics of the room.
- Stage Lighting & Drapery
- Stage lighting layouts, dimming and control, and acoustically aware drapery specification.
- Specialist Consultancy
- Inputs at civil design stage for sight lines, seating layout, stage and side stage, then complete design for acoustics, AV, drapery and lighting alongside the principal project architect.
- Analysis, Simulation & Design Review
- RT60 and STI simulation to a target Speech Transmission Index of 0.7 or above, background-noise measurement, and acoustic review and correction of designs prepared by others — including work for specialist contractors on international projects.
- Acoustic Assessment & Renovation
- Measurement and diagnosis of existing halls — reverberation time, background noise and speech intelligibility — with remedial acoustic and AV design.
Frequently asked questions
What does an auditorium acoustic consultant do?
An auditorium acoustic consultant sets the room volume, shape and surface treatment so speech and music are clear at every seat, controls noise from building services and outside, and specifies the audio-visual, stage lighting and drapery systems that work with those acoustics rather than against them.
At what stage should an acoustic consultant join a project?
At civil design stage. Sight lines, seating layout, stage and side-stage geometry and room volume are fixed in that phase and they set the ceiling on what the acoustics can ever achieve. V. N. Purandare™ is typically brought into the wider team alongside the principal project architect.
What reverberation time should an auditorium have?
It depends on use and volume. Speech-led halls generally target a shorter reverberation time than music-led halls, and IS 4954 — the Indian Standard for acoustical design of auditoriums and conference halls — gives recommended RT60 ranges against room volume. The design also has to hold background noise low enough for that reverberation figure to be audible as clarity rather than noise.
Do you take on complete auditorium design or only acoustics?
Both. Complete auditorium design covers acoustics, audio-visual systems, stage drapery, stage lighting, seating and sight lines under one consultancy; specialist acoustic-only or AV-only appointments are also undertaken.
Can an existing auditorium with poor sound be fixed?
Usually yes. An acoustic assessment measures reverberation time, background noise and speech intelligibility, and remedial design then targets the specific causes — surface treatment, volume corrections, HVAC noise and loudspeaker coverage.
How many auditoriums has V. N. Purandare designed?
301 auditorium projects. The portfolio index lists 287 records because a record is often a premises rather than a single hall — an institute or medical college may hold two or more auditoriums of different capacity, each designed as its own commission.
What speech intelligibility do you design to?
A Speech Transmission Index of 0.7 or above is the working target for speech-critical rooms. Designs are simulated for RT60 and STI before construction and measured after completion, so the delivered room can be checked against the figure it was designed to.
Is V. N. Purandare the same firm as V. N. Purandare & Associates?
Yes. V. N. Purandare™ is the current trademark name of the practice previously known as V. N. Purandare & Associates. Same founder, same practice, continuous since 1997.
Where are you based and where do you work?
Based in Pune, Maharashtra, with projects across India and internationally, spanning auditoriums, theatres, convention centres, educational institutions, studios and places of worship.
